How did the teacher make sure that the students were able to demonstrate their thinking, answer the question?
Set up rules for the discussion, kept everything very open, no judgement, practiced the lay-out of how run the seminar, reflective listening, demonstrate response in writing
What are some features of the learning environment that support this questioning?
Circular seating arrangement (could see each others' faces), each had their own copy of the artwork, sitting boy/girl, teacher sitting in circle too, not necessarily a right or wrong answer, socratic seminar rules about sharing, plenty of wait time
How does asking higher order thinking questions and eliciting explanations improve students’ learning?
Helps the student to think outside the box, not simply 'recall', high level thinking students are role models for lower level students, could relate to physics, able to think about concept in a more broad range, must explain the 'why' (justify answer)
How do you ensure a culture that engages every student, every question, every time?
Pull some students into the conversation, level of expectation, level of accountability, every student needs to respond (pick a stick, think-pair-share, thumbs, whiteboards, etc.), written response
